Anchorage Museum

The Anchorage Museum in Anchorage is a large museum for history, science, ecology, and ethnography. It is a large, modern building located in the heart of the city. The museum is dedicated to learning and exploring the history, people, and the land of Alaska.


At the museum, one can come across materials from the permanent collection in addition to visiting exhibitions regularly. The museum was set up in the year 1968 in a building spread out across an area of 10,000 square foot. The building was launched with around 60 paintings borrowed from Alaska along with a collection of 2500 ethnographic and historic objects, and some staff. The museum was designed by Giurgola or Mitchell architects. The museum has grown constantly while expanding three times since its inception.


Most recently, in the year, the museum was expanded to around 170,000 square feet featuring around 500,000 historic photographs and 25,000 objects. The museum was first accredited in the year 1973 and has managed to maintain its overall accreditation. In the year 1992, the museum became the center of the Alaska Office of the NMNH Arctic Studies Center for supporting the overall mission of the museum through exhibitions, education, and research.
